How Do Solar Panels Work?



Sunlight Hits Solar PV Panels

The Solar PV Panels harvest sunlight and converts it to direct current (DC) electricity. This electricity flows to the Inverter.


DC to AC

The Inverter then converts the DC electricity to alternating current (AC) electricity to make it useable for everyday purposes in the home or office, and records the energy produced by the photovoltaic (PV) system.


AC to Breaker

AC electricity is fed from the inverter to the AC Breaker Panel. From here, electricity is distributed normally to devices within the premises.


Breaker to Meter

When there is excess electricity produced; the electricity passes through the Utility Meter, which records the inflow of electricity to the customer from the grid, or the outflow of electricity from the customer to the grid. The latter is possible through the Net-Metering program, and the customer receives credits for the amount of electricity exported.


Meter to Grid / Grid to Meter

For grid-tied solar PV systems, the house or establishment may still receive electricity directly from the grid even though it has solar PV panels installed. Electricity flows normally to the utility meter, to the breaker, and to the electronic devices during the times that there is no solar production.

Grid-Tied Solar


Spectrum offers Grid-tied Photovoltaic (PV) Power Systems. This consists of solar PV panels, at least one inverter, a power conditioning unit, and a grid connection equipment. These systems do not contain a battery solution due to cost considerations, and will only generate power during the day time.

Solar power generated by the grid-tied PV system is consumed by the house or building. Excess power generated can be supplied back to the utility grid. In contrast, if the PV system does not generate enough energy to power the establishment, the deficit will be sourced directly from the utility grid.
